Student Activities

Special ASC 2010 Graduate Student Activities, Washington, D.C.

Dear ASC 2010 Student Attendee:

The 2010 Applied Superconductivity Conference is organizing a special agenda with activities for graduate students. Surveys at past conferences have demonstrated that these initiatives positively increased students’ personal and professional interest in seeking careers in the superconductor community. All students who are interested in careers in areas covered by the Applied Superconductivity Conference are invited to participate.

A special Student Information Office will be manned at the Omni Shoreham on Sunday through Thursday of the conference. Information about student activities will be posted at the SIO, and students can sign up for a variety of social activities.

Two special sessions are planned for student attendees, one lunch session and one evening session. The lunch session, sponsored by the Coalition for the Commercial Application of Superconductors (CCAS), will afford students the opportunity to meet top experts on U.S. and international projects and commercial applications related to superconducting materials and applications and learn more about job opportunities.  Box lunches will be provided, and students need to sign up in advance. During the evening session, students will be exposed to a general technical introduction of the presented project and hear about specific details regarding their potential contribution, i.e. how they can directly be involved, what career opportunities are available, etc. The evening session will have four presentations dedicated to governmental projects and on commercial applications and the private sector.  There will be time for dialog, and light food and beverage will be provided, courtesy of our sponsors.

Other informal evening activities may include an evening visit to the nearby ‘Restaurant Row’, local pubs, etc. These events provide an opportunity for networking, so come and meet others who have interests similar to yours.

FInally, students are invited to the ASC Banquet to be held on Thursday evening. Please go to the REGENCY Ballroom, where special student tables, hosted by a senior scientist or engineer, have been designated foryou. We look forward to meeting you at ASC!

CHECK THE WEBSITE PERIODICALLY FOR UPDATES PRIOR TO THE CONFERENCE.  SCHEDULES WILL ALSO BE AVAILABLE AT THE OMNI.
